The York/Traip wrestling team placed eighth at last weekend’s 18-team annual Spartan Invitational at Sanford High School.

And that was perfectly fine with York head coach Wally Caldwell.

“Our front-line wrestlers did a pretty good job,” Caldwell said. “We finished ahead of Massabesic, Portland, Biddeford, Mountain Valley, Scarborough, and Bonny Eagle, that’s a nice little bonus finishing ahead of those teams. We may have lost to those guys in dual competition, but in this format, this day, we wrestled pretty well.”

Danbury, Conn. won the team championship with 243 points, and was followed by Timberlane (Plaistow, Conn., 217.5), Cumberland, R.I. (169), Xavier (Middletown, Conn., 152), Marshwood (123), Wells (117), Camden Hills (106) and York (73).

“This (tournament) is clearly the best competition we face,” Caldwell said. “A full 16-man bracket, there is nothing that compares with that, nothing.”

Sophomore Jason Brengolini went 4-2 in the tournament and placed fourth in the 170-pound division.

Freshman Will Orso also went 4-2 in his 182-pound weight class and placed fourth. Orso lost his first match of the tournament, but battled back and won four his next five matches, including an 8-2 win against his opening opponent.

“(Orso) just wrestled tougher and made less mistakes (than their first match),” Caldwell said. “He really had a good day, definitely one of his better performances of the season.”

Senior captain Austin Niles placed fifth in the 220. He also lost his first match, but pinned his next four opponents.

“Getting those guys on the podium at the end of the night was great,” Caldwell said.

Senior captain Nate Davis went 3-2 at 195, while junior Austin Bennett (138) and senior Archil Shonia (285) each had one win in their respective weight classes.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Biddeford on Wednesday in a dual meet and will be one of 12 schools at Saturday’s Kennebunk Duals.
