Patriots wide receiver Josh Gordon is stepping away from the team.

In a statement on Twitter, Gordon said Thursday: “I take my mental health very seriously at this point to ensure I remain able to perform at the highest level. I have recently felt like I could have a better grasp on things mentally. With that said, I will be stepping away from the football field for a bit to focus on my mental health.”

The 27-year-old is reportedly facing another suspension for violating the terms of his reinstatement to the league, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Gordon - who was traded from Cleveland to New England earlier this season for a fifth-round pick - had been suspended by the NFL for most of the last four seasons because of drug violations.

The Patriots issued this statement on Thursday morning:

“We support Josh Gordon in his continued efforts to focus on his health. His attempt to do so is a private and personal matter, which we intend to respect.”
