Outlook: The Blue Hawks missed the postseason for the second straight year last season, but this group has a chance to change that behind some veteran seniors and a monster junior class. “We have a solid group of returning kids so we think we will be deeper this season and a bit more competitive,” Tufts said. “Lots of kids with varsity experience.” … That includes two goalies in Warr and Rogles. The senior trio of Blood, Vadeboncoeur and Barry will serve as team captains. … Exeter will need to lean on its wealth of experience during a difficult start to the season that includes games with Bishop Guertin, Concord, Windham and Bedford. The opener is Wednesday against BG at The Rinks (4 p.m.). “We will find out how good we are early,” Tufts said.

Outlook: With an experienced nucleus returning, the Green Wave look to ride a big senior class and solid goaltending to the final four once again. That road got a little easier with perennial contenders Windham and Bow moving up to Division I this year. … Dover would do well to take advantage of a favorable early season schedule that has the Green Wave playing six of their first eight games at home. They open Monday against Kingswood at Dover Arena.

Coach: Bill Widi, 4th season

2017-18 result: 5-12-1, lost to Kingswood in first round

Key returning players: Fred Holmes, sr., D; Brad Weit, sr., G; David Blodgett, jr., F; Jack Suhesky. Jr., F; Andrew Madden, jr., F; Nick Schultz, sr., F

Outlook: The defensive-minded Clipper-Mules return the majority of their team from a year ago. … They’re built from the back end out anchored by Holmes, a first-team all-state pick last season, and Weit in goal. Durkin has shown potential. … With the graduation of its leading scorer, the club will likely feature a balanced attack. … “I think we’ll be very good defensively,” Widi said. “The team has really good chemistry. As far as scoring goes it will be coming from all three lines. We’ll play a lot of low-scoring games.”

Coach: Shane Maurice, 3rd season

2017-18 result: 9-11, lost in D-III quarterfinals to Kennett

Key returning players: Kevin Baker, jr.,G; Matt Kelly, sr., F; Cam Frank, jr., F; Daniel Strum, jr., F; Cole Perra, jr.,D; Colby Walsh, jr.,D; Gage Gagne, jr., F

Other key players: Aaron Bono, fr., F; Jacob Pelletier, fr., F; Will Sawyer, fr., D

Outlook: With just one senior on the roster, how quickly the younger players develop will likely dictate how successful the Hilltoppers will be. … The goal is to be in playoff contention in February, but that won’t be an easy task as the team moves back up to the competitive Division II. They play Dover, Spaulding and Oyster River twice this season. … “It’s exciting to be back in D-II,” Maurice said. “Obviously we look forward to playing our traditional rivalry games.”

Other key players: Nick Stone, jr., D; Brandon Grondin, soph., D; Riley Ducharme, soph., F; Brady Blaisdell, soph., F; Ryan Hatfield, jr., F; Colby Stuart, soph., F

Outlook: The Red Raiders won’t lack motivation after missing the D-II playoffs for the first time since the 1997-98 season. … They return almost everyone with the exception of leading scorer Garrett Langis, who will concentrate on getting ready for baseball, according to Ferullo. … Ellis was second on the team in scoring last year and Camire was third. … “We’re not going to score pretty goals,” Ferullo said. “We’ll have to grind it out. We want to be a team that’s hard to play against.”

Other key players: Mike Somerset, sr., F; Mathis Savard, sr., F; Alex Anderson, sr., F; Chase Gagnon, jr., F; Matt Barnes, jr., F

Outlook: With a nucleus of seven seniors and four juniors, the Saints look to make another deep playoff run. … They’re strong in the back end with the return of Eno in goal and three of their top four defensemen led by MacLean, a two-way threat. … STA graduated four, including D-II player of the year JoJo Grella. It will have to be a group effort to replace Grella’s offensive production. … Savard is an exchange student from Canada. … “We hope that the offense will mature over the course of the season as players grow into bigger roles on the ice,” Sheehan said.

Coach: Jude Logue, third season

2017-18 season: 4-14, didn’t qualify for Division II tournament

Key returning players: Daniel Giacalone, sr., C; Cole Woodman, sr., D; Braeden Logue, jr., F; Jack Ellis

Other key players: Tanner Holt, jr., D; Conor Belcher, jr., F; Thomas Vaziri, fresh, F; Cooper Kinnaly, fresh., F

Outlook: Giacalone has been named the captain of the Warriors, with Woodman and Logue being tabbed as alternates. …. The Warriors, after a winless season two years ago, won four games last season and coach Logue likes what he has seen so far in the preseason. … ““It’s early, but I think we have a little bit of more of an upbeat, positive feeling going into the year, it’s refreshing,” Logue said. “I am excited about that. We have some new faces, and it feels almost like a whole different team. We are excited, and the kids are starting to feel the same way.” … Braeden Logue led the Warriors in scoring last season, and has impressed thus far. .. “He’s one of our better players,” his father said. “He’s big and strond; a really strong forward who goes into the corners.” … The Warriors may have got lucky with the arrival of Vaziri, who moved to Hampton from Boston. … “He’s an unbelievable skater,” Logue said. “He handles the puck well and he’s going to be someone to watch, he’s quite the player. He’s the type of player we’ve been looking for.” …. Winnacunnet is scheduled to open its 18-game Division II season on Wednesday at Dover.

Coach: Eric Royal, 15th season

2017-18 result: 7-11, missed playoffs

Outlook: Offensively, the KnightHawks will likely be OK, but how committed they are to defense might ultimately decide their fate in Class A South. … They play their first three games at home and opened Saturday against Class A North’s Lawrence/Skowhegan/MCI at Dover (N.H.) Arena. … Honkonen and Tomblin lead the offense. … “We should be able to score some goals,” Royal said, “but we will not be successful if we try and win every game in a shootout style.”

Coach: Jim Powers, fourth season

2017-18 result: 14-6 last season, lost to Cape Elizabeth in the Class B South quarterfinal round.

Key returning players: Jake Nelson, sr., F; Dalton McCann, sr., F; Andrew Bertolini, sr., F; Marshall Ford, sr., D

Other key players: Max Pickett, jr., D; Dillon Brodsky, jr., F: Aiden Drew, jr., D; Troy Nelson, soph., G

Outlook: York returns a trio of senior forwards in Jake Nelson, McCann and Bertolini who combined for 31 goals and 28 assists last season. Bertolini had 13 goals and 12 assists, and tied for second in team points last season. … “Those three give us a pretty potent first line that can compete with any team that we play,” Powers said. “We’re also seeing some nice new things from the new faces as well. We have seen a lot of good signs (in the preseason), and that is only going to develop as the season goes on.” … Troy Nelson saw some time in goal last season as a backup to three-year starter Keenan Gamache. … Junior Domenic Carlson and freshmen Benjamin Soares will also contend for time in goal. … “I think all of them will see time over the course of the season,” Powers said. “By Christmas time, we should have an indication of who is leading the pack.” … The Wildcats opened their season on Saturday against Greely.

Other key players: Michael O'Brien, jr., D; Brock James, fr., F

Outlook: With almost half the club moving on, the Bulldogs will feature many new faces in the lineup this season as they embark on a difficult schedule. … Berwick has talent at the top of the roster but lack the depth of past years. … Bulldogs split their first two games with Derby scoring twice, O’Brien adding a goal and an assist, and Ramsay making 34 saves in a 4-2 win over Kents Hill. …“I look forward to seeing this group come together,” Jarnot said. “If our most skilled players develop into leaders, this could be a fun year."
