ARUNDEL, Maine - Thanks to the generous support of patrons throughout the 2018 season, the Vinegar Hill Youth Theatre has awarded a $4,000 scholarship to Juli Anna Ennis, Kennebunk High School Class of 2019.
“Before the talented singers and musicians who grace our stage every year became professional performers, they were star struck teenagers wondering if they had what it takes to make it,” Vinegar Hill Music Theatre co-founder Tim Harrington explained. “We created this organization to give local children the confidence to follow their dreams and I’m absolutely thrilled to award our very first scholarship to such a deserving young woman.” In addition to being a talented percussionist, Juli Anna is one of the founders of Project Playback, a group of high school students who visit local nursing homes bringing musical therapy to the elderly. After graduating Kennebunk High School with a 96.69 GPA, Juli Anna will be attending the University of Colorado, Boulder College of Music this fall.
“The Vinegar Hill Youth Theatre is more than a gift to the community, it’s a tribute to the history of this building and the legacy of supporting young talent we’re proud to carry on here,” Managing Director Sarah Dearing said. Originally founded by Adrienne Grant, the previous owner of the Arundel Barn Playhouse, the Youth Theatre program embraced summer youth theatre through internships and learning experiences from 1997-2015. In its newly re-energized format, the Vinegar Hill Youth Theatre will work to generate funds to help local children explore their musical and theatrical gifts. “This is just the beginning,” Dearing concluded. “I’m looking forward to hearing from teachers and the leaders of youth organizations to learn how Vinegar Hill Youth Theatre can support their performing arts programs through our fundraising efforts.”
To raise money for future scholarships and youth arts programs, Vinegar Hill Music Theatre hosts two annual fundraising events. During the 2019 Kennebunkport Festival, the Summer Soiree sponsored by Weirs Buick GMC, the Kennebunkport Resort Collection and Batson River Brewing and Distilling raised $5,000 for Vinegar Hill Youth Theatre. The second fundraising event will be announced later this summer.
