March 11 — To the Editor:
Recently Lisa Sweet of Rye and others have questioned how salaries of public employees are front page news. The mere fact that she had to question the how or the why says that the reporter did the job as it should be done.
It was presented as dispassionate information. One might infer that, yes, public employees are overpaid. Since city budgets have increased at twice the rate of inflation for two decades, it would be a logical conclusion.
This does not mean that the employees are to blame. Quite the contrary. They have done well by their unions. It is two decades of gutless and indifferent City Councils, including the current one, that have brought us to this point. As a result, many city employee salaries are out of pace with other municipalities as well as the private sector.
As with many things in life, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and fiscal irresponsibility is not a thing of beauty.
