SANFORD - Leading 29-28 after three quarters of play, the Sanford High girls basketball team outscored Portland 16-12 the rest of the way to take a 45-40 decision, improving their record to 4-5.

Sanford was sparked by Paige Cote who tossed in a total of 24 points, 15 of them from the foul line. Sanford led 25-15 at the half.

Jillian Lizotte was second in scoring for Sanford, chipping in with 12 points.

Also scoring for the Spartans were Julia Allen with four, Hope Tarbox with three, and Samya Santiague with two.

Demers, Plante take firsts in Spartan Invitational

Sol Demers and Isaac Plante each placed first in their respective weight classes at the Spartan Invitational Wrestling Tournament last weekend.

Demers placed first in the 220-pound class and was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler. Plante placed first in the 182-pound class.

Danbury, Connecticut placed first in team results followed by Timberlane (N.H.), Cumberland (R.I.), Xavier (Conn.), Marshwood and Wells.

Also wrestling well were Massabesic wrestlers Matt Pooler and Noah Hernandez who placed second in their weight class.

Sanford boys top Marshwood

SANFORD - At the midpoint of the season, the Sanford boys basketball team defeated Marshwood by a 47-42 decision to improve their record to 2-6.

Leyton Bickford led the Spartans in scoring with 15 points followed by Carson Bickford with 11. Leyton also had 12 rebounds.

In one of the tougher losses of the season, the upset-minded Spartans got a timely basket from Mat Romano to go ahead 45-44 with just 3.2 seconds remaining in the game only to see the South Portland Red Riots come back with two free throws in the time remaining to take a 46-45 victory in South Portland last week. Sanford led 8-5 after one and 18-16 at the half but fell behind 30-28 after three.

Carson Bickford led the Spartans with 17 points followed by Romano with 12, and Leyton Bickford with 11.

In another tough luck loss last week, the Spartans were nearly blown out in the first quarter by host Portland, being outscored 14-2, but they regained their composure and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, falling just short by a 49-47 score.

Sanford outscored the hosts 12-10 in the second quarter and 23-19 in third to close it to 43-37 after three, but Portland hung on for the victory to improve to 6-3 while Sanford fell to 2-7.

John Garnsey scored 13 for Sanford and Leyton Bickford had 12. Romano was third in scoring with eight points. Miles Hilton added five while Jacob Godwin, CJ Lantagne and Ethan Shane each scored three. Garnsey led in 3-pointers with three.

Sanford girls pick up three wins

With Makenzie Soderlund leading the way, Coach James Cantara's Sanford Junior High School 8th grade girls basketball team racked up three wins in recent action after getting off to a slow start due to injuries to three starters.

The first win was over Biddeford by a 36-16 score. Soderlund and Alana Pettine each scored 12 points followed by Brooke Berren and Kaylynne Hessler who added five points each.

In a 28-24 win over Massabessic, Soderlund scored 14 points followed by Ryleigh Kimball with eight and Pettine with three.

Soderlund scored 13 in a 32-29 win over York. Brooke Berren added seven and Hessler scored five. Also scoring were Pettine, Madison Sheppard and Bella Bond with four apiece.

In earlier season action, Soderlund scored 16 with Pettine adding 8 and Hessler 4 in a 36-32 loss to Noble.

In a 63-42 loss to Marshwood, Soderlund scored 34 followed by Pettine with three and Izzy Trumble with 2.

In the second game of the season, Soderlund scored 20 in a loss to Bonny Eagle. In game three, Soderlund scored 15 and Hessler added six in a 43-27 loss to Westbrook.
