SANFORD Have you ever dreamed of writing a book? Do you have notebooks and piles of story ideas lying around? An introductory class at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7 will contain creative writing exercises, brainstorming on your project ideas, and learning specific writing techniques and strategies. The class will be taught by Cindy Simon, published author, M.A., writing coach, and community educator.

Winter Reading Challenge for Adults and Young Adults starts Jan. 2. During the months of January, February and March, read five books, and complete a brief review form for each one. Forms will be entered into a drawing for a special prize, winner drawn March 29. Participants may read whatever they choose, but a list of staff favorites will be provided for those in search of something different to read. If participants read a book on the list they will receive two entries. Enjoy the challenge, and our beautiful winter here in Maine, and visit the library whenever weather permits.

Knitting Group: Every Thursday from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

New! Senior College Book Group leader Arlene Jackson is heading up a free winter book discussion. This will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays in the community room. The book selections are as follows: Jan. 2, "The Library Book" by Susan Orlean; Feb. 6, "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt; March 6, "Heartland" by Sarah Smarsh. All are welcome to attend.
