FREMONT — Brentwood Fire Chief Bill Campbell was charged with driving while intoxicated after getting into a car accident Saturday night, police said.

Campbell, 49, of Fremont, was arrested at the scene of a two-car crash on Route 107 in Fremont just north of Kelsey Drive.

Fremont police Lt. Peter Morelli said Campbell was driving north in a Ford F-350 pickup when he reportedly crossed the double yellow lines and struck a Mitsubishi Galant in its rear driver's side door just after 9:30 p.m. He said the impact of the crash caused both vehicles to stray off the southbound lane and strike utility poles.

Morelli said Campbell was unhurt in the crash.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, Jeffrey Goucher, 18, of Newton and his female passenger suffered minor injuries and were transported to Exeter Hospital for treatment and were later released.

“Luckily, it wasn’t a head-on collision. This could’ve been a lot worse,” Morelli said.

Following his arrest, Campbell was released on a $1,000 personal recognizance bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Brentwood District Court Oct. 18.

Campbell, who is also a lieutenant in the Nashua Fire Department,  could not be reached for comment. Brentwood Town Administrator Karen Clement did not respond to requests for comment inquiring about Campbell’s employment status with the town.
