YORK - It’s true, Hollywood has its Emmys and Oscars, but if your cause is the ‘art’ of healthy aging, then last weekend, York, was ‘the place’ to show your support, and have a lot of fun while doing so!

To celebrate the newly created, Hancock Family Fund for Health Aging, York Hospital and the Hancock Family hosted a two-day event-filled weekend, beginning with a Gala on Saturday evening at The York Harbor Inn followed by the 28th Annual Frank E. Hancock Memorial Golf Tournament at The York Golf & Tennis Club.

The fund itself was created to honor the lives of Cape Neddick residents Frank and Kay Hancock who embodied the classic art of enjoying life while aging with grace and humor. A former Attorney General of Maine, and Hospital Board Chair, Frank was a powerful, yet diplomatic intellect who easily blended commitment to his community and family. Kay, always strong, caring, a Hospital Trustee and chair of many committees — maintained her wit and mental edge until the age of 91. Their children, Cal, Josh and Emi continue their parents' commitment to York Hospital as they helped to create these events from their respective homes across the United States. The fund that bears their family name will help support Transportation, Strength and Balance, and Home Delivery Meal Program and other services.

The more than 100 guests at the Gala were inspired by the words of Dr. Lisa Belisle, wellness editor for Maine Magazine and host of Love Maine Radio; and Senior Health experts Barbara Roberge, PhD NP Nurse Practitioner and Ardeshir Hashmi, MD of Massachusetts General Hospital – Geriatric Medicine. All of whom provided the eager audience with information on aging in a healthy and supportive manner. Words based on their own experience in research, their offices, patients…real life. The remainder of the evening was filled with laughter, co-hosted by Hospital President Jud Knox and Josh Hancock, consisting of video tributes to the Hospital from friends as far as Hollywood including Jonathan Goldsmith (“The Most Interesting Man in the World,” Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad’s Marie Schrader, now in CBS’s Life in Pieces) and Al Ford Uzielli (Ford Motor Co. executive and restaurateur). The appetizers were enjoyed by all and graciously provided by Hancock Gourmet Lobster Company owner, Cal Hancock. Silent and live auctions proved great fun — and effective fundraising, as applause ran rampant during an exciting back and forth for a signed bottle of wine from Francis Ford Coppola, a friend of Josh Hancock. The evening came to a close with a door prize for a trip to Paris.

But the weekend was young for Sunday still held to tradition – The Frank E. Hancock Memorial Golf Tournament. The last Sunday of September, the York Golf & Tennis Club, the weather and scenery were beautiful and more than 125 golfers and volunteers made certain they arrived at The Club to enjoy both.

“Although each year since Frank’s passing, the tournament has benefited a different York Hospital program, we think it’s exciting - and that both he and Kay would be thrilled to know the proceeds are benefiting a fund in their honor, with programs designed to help our community live out their lives happily in a myriad of ways. Ways that work for them in body, mind and spirit,” offered Hospital President Jud Knox.

And the golfers followed suit enjoying delicious post golf offerings at the Awards Reception from York Hospital’s Dining and Nutrition Team, along with many Raffle Packages donated by local businesses.

Tournament Champions Dave Fletcher, Rob Hannigan, Mike Jacobs and Rick MacFarland were cheered as they accepted honors and awards for having the low score of 61. Closest to the Pin honors went to Chad Pierce for the Men and Kim Vieira for the Women, while Longest Drive Honors went to Christine Sieks and David Fletcher.

And when the sun went down on the York River on Sunday evening, almost $60,000 was raised for The Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging. These events offered many in our community the opportunity to learn something new, dine with friends, dress up, make new friends, exercise, be outdoors, laugh…and celebrate life. Josh Hancock summed it up, “York Hospital continues to innovate in both health care and fund raising! My parents would be delighted at such a successful outcome in terms of both finances and fun.”
