LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Two Maine teens accused of leading police on a chase in a stolen front-end loader earlier this month made their initial appearance in court.

The boys, both 14, were each charged with eight felonies in connection with the Sept. 12 theft and subsequent joyride.

One teen chose not to answer to charges Tuesday in Lewiston District Court. The other denied charges including aggravated criminal mischief and attempted aggravated assault among several other offenses.

Police say the duo stole the loader in West Gardiner and led a low-speed chase that ended in New Gloucester after an officer fired shots at the construction vehicle's tires. Along the way the boys allegedly damaged property, swerved at cruisers and deliberately struck another motorist.

Both teens remain in custody at Long Creek Youth Development Center.
