Sept. 24 — To the Editor:

Dear Mr. Gladhill,

Thank you for all your hard work over the years. As a Portsmouth resident I sincerely wish you were not leaving the Planning Board and Historic District Commission. Yours is a balanced and thoughtful voice — we need more of that today.

Here's a poem I wrote that lets you know you're not alone in your viewpoint:

I am the keeper who speaks for the bees.

I've seen what the spraying (and digging and paving)

Can do to the creatures

We all should be saving.

Our needs, yours- and mine-

are certainly valid

but being too greedy

turns everything pallid.

A world without space to rest and reflect,

Not only for people- but even humble insects-

is not worth the money

you hope you will reap

in a year, in a month,

or even a week.

Look ahead, think of others

and not just yourself.

You'll be glad you did something

that's bigger than wealth.
