Sept. 19 — To the Editor:

Yesterday I met up with Shawn O’Connor; the person who I hope will represent New Hampshire’s gerrymandered First Congressional District. I asked Shawn to meet in person because my fellow “Berniecrat” has recently been slandered by the media and some Democrats. Based on the things I had been hearing, I had the impression that the Democratic Party was pushing a narrative. I was right. Democrats are attacking an independent candidate who was ousted from their party; an independent candidate with a real progressive agenda and a chance to win. It is very clear that Democrats are scared of real change and real progress. Speaking with Shawn for only 30-minutes he answered all of my questions honestly and candidly. I quickly realized that I have a lot in common with this man. Despite being portrayed as a carpetbagger, Shawn has lived here for five years and loves our state; for a lot of the same reasons that I do. When he moved here, he had no intention of running for office until he was inspired by Bernie Sanders. I relate to this on a very deep level as Bernie inspired me to get involved. He is an independent who will caucus with the majority representing New Hampshire residents and importantly, the LGBT community.

The two-party system is broken and fixed. So much so, that it is more of a one-party system. The two mainstream parties are both funded and controlled by the same special interests. Sitting in Washington they do not represent you or I, they represent big money. Electing independent candidates who run on clean money campaigns is the only way to continue Bernie’s Political Revolution. The Democratic Party will never allow that revolution. Shawn is exactly the type of person we need in Congress.

The people of New Hampshire’s First Congressional District deserve to see a 3-way debate between Congressional candidates Carol Shea-Porter, Frank Guinta, and Shawn O’Connor. Then voters can see who deserves a seat in Congress to represent us.
